For the 400 or so students in Buena Vista, Mich., school is over, even though the academic year isn’t supposed to end until the middle of June. Instead, they will likely attend “skills camp.” If the school board approves the advancement of students — despite not finishing out the year — students will be able to attend “skills camp,” a voluntary substitute for school, the district announced Monday at a press conference with Superintendent Deborah Hunter-Harvill, Saginaw Intermediate School District Superintendent Richard Syrek, and Michigan Department of Education chief Michael Flanagan. Last week, the Buena Vista School District fired all of its teachers and closed its schools because it had run out of money. Because the district accepted money from the state for a program it was no longer providing, the state is withholding the district’s school aid for at least three months.

Buena Vista School District Officially Closes For Year, Offers ‘Skills Camp’

i have been in the middle of a severe depression that i am only just starting to feel a bit better over so i just haven’t had the heart or ability to comment on this.

but yes—you read that correctly. they are shutting down schools *in the middle of the school year*. they are saying—money is more important than keeping young people in school.

and YES—in the shock of the century, this school district is majority black. did you catch my sarcasm? you should’ve. would it be ok to shut down a majority white school in the middle of the school year? and tell the young people that they get to go to “skills camps”? (which are entirely voluntary)? would it be ok to do this to a school in a wealthy district?

this is an act of white supremacy. this is withdrawing resources from poor black people *because* they’re poor and black. this is saying that a *skills camp* is ok for poor black people, while the seniors going to school in the majority white and wealthy gland blanc suburb get college prep, SAT prep, counseling over university options, etc.

I am so angry right now that I started crying. I honestly can’t believe what I was reading..
Not only are they completely racist to the point that it is disgusting, but they are also homophobic and apparently feel no remorse.
What’s worse is that they have over 1,000 followers
Please go on their Instagram and report them and get this shit removed!

Outrage in Delaware  (ed: understatement of the young year)

This picture is from a Milford, Delaware playground.  Milford is in Southern Delaware in the very conservative Sussex County.  I originally saw this picture on Facebook, from a liberal friend downstate, who was sharing it via an original posting of the very nonliberal Dan Gaffney, a conservative talk show radio host.   It is nice to know that the outrage concerning this photo is bipartisan.  And what is so outrageous about it, you ask?
Well, you can read what it says in English.   In Spanish it says (paraphrasing) “You have to have a permit to play here or you will be arrested.”    The english version contains no information about needing a permit or else you will be subject to police action.   It is an obvious intimidation tactic and a not so subtle “Whites Only” sign.

And, no, it’s not Photoshopped. The sign is indeed real.

Can there be a playground at which white supremacists and their kids get arrested?

This “performance” from the Philadelphia Mummers Parade may singlehandedly destroy the white race. This is SO, SO, SO RACIST that there might actually be a time-lag before people say I’m being “overly sensitive” and “politically correct.” I’m offended as a human, American, Indian & a comedian.

Houston Police Kills Unarmed Latino, Witnesses Dispute HPD ‘Official Account’
A man killed by a Houston police officer had his hands in the air when he was fatally shot, witnesses said, disputing the official account of the incident.
Houston Police Department officials said Rufino Lara refused officer J. McGowan’s commands in Spanish and English to stop when she spotted him walking away while she was investigating an assault Monday afternoon. He kept one of his hands tucked under his shirt, police said. When he turned around suddenly with his hand still under his shirt, McGowan shot him once, killing him, police said.
On Tuesday, two people disputed that account.
Florida Ruvio, a family friend, bumped into Lara on his way back from a liquor store near the 7000 block of Bissonnet near Fondren in southwest Houston. Lara told her that some men were chasing him with a knife and asked her to call police.
When two officers arrived to investigate the assault report, they approached Lara, asking him to stop and put his hands up.
“They were speaking to him in English only,” Ruvio said at a news conference.
Lara, who doesn’t speak English, did not stop the first time, Ruvio said. Eventually, he put both hands up against the wall of a vacant store, facing his back to the officers.
“He didn’t have his hands in his pocket or his shirt,” said Ruvio, who remained with Lara throughout the event.
A second witness, 14-year-old Rigoberto Rubio, who was buying water from a machine nearby, said he also saw Lara with both hands against the wall. The teenager said he didn’t know Lara personally.
Suddenly, Lara turned around to face the officers and was shot fatally by McGowan, Ruvio said, his hands still suspended in the air.
Stunned at the scene, Ruvio yelled to McGowan that she had killed an innocent person, and McGowan responded that “he had drawn out a gun.”
McGowan then proceeded to tear Lara’s shirt open and take off his shoes, said Ruvio. No weapon was found.
Ruvio brought out her phone to take a video of the scene, she said, but an officer seized it from her, telling her she was not to record anything.
On Tuesday, Houston police declined to comment about the allegations, citing the HPD internal affairs investigation into the shooting.

Alan DeWayne Blueford Murdered by Oakland Police Department
At or about midnight, May 6, 2012, Alan and 2 friends were standing on the corner of 90 th and Birch Street waiting for “some girls in a white chevy,” Alan described to his father, Alan Blueford, during a phone call. After the phone call, police officers approached Alan and his friends, with guns drawn. The police officers had been called to respond to another incident, but decided to stop Alan and his friends when they saw them because they “believed the young men had a concealed weapon.”
Alan ran down Birch Street, away from the police officers.
Approximately two blocks down Birch Street on the 9200 Block the officer chasing Alan murdered him by shooting him 3 times. The officer also shot himself.
Although, Alan had his brown wallet with his ID, Oakland Police Department never called to tell his parents he was shot and killed.
Alan’s two friends were detained for over 6 hours. After their release, one of the young men had the traumatic task of calling Alan’s parents and telling them Alan was shot and killed by an Oakland Police Officer.
Initial reports put out by OPD, stated that “a suspect” (Alan) and a police officer exchanged gun fire and the officer was shot in the stomach by the suspect and the suspect was shot by the officer. Both were said to have been rushed to Highland Hospital where Alan died and the police officer was expected to recover. OPD also included in their reports witness statements who said they saw Alan shooting. OPD reported that they retrieved Alan’s firearm at the scene.
Later OPD changed their story to state that the officer was shot in the leg and an investigation was in process to determine whether the officer was wounded by “friendly fire.”
Only one of the officers chased Alan.
What we now know is that Alan Blueford never shot the police officer, at the police officer, or anyone else. OPD changed their story yet again, admitting and confirming that THE OFFICER SHOT HIMSELF.
We also know that Alan was never rushed to Highland Hospital. Only the police officer. Alan’s body lied in the streets for approximately 4 hours.
Alan was shot multiple times by the police officer.
The family has reason to believe that Alan never had a firearm. The family has reason to believe that Alan never caused the officer to be threatened. Alan’s body can be described as a shorter stature (approximately 5 ft 6 ½ inches) and thin built (140 lbs).
•
When Alan’s family learned of the claimed circumstances surrounding Alan’s death, we all knew that the facts were not true! Additionally, because they never called to confirm his death, we were sadly left with hope that the unnamed “suspect” was not Alan. He was joy to many people. We are suffering from a great loss.
Now OPD claims that the “victim” (no longer suspect) was a convicted felon on probation. His family will simply respond by saying felony probation does not describe Alan’s character. To describe Alan, you have to share that he 1] was a Christian; 2] worked with the disabled children at Skyline, one of whom described “Al” as his “bestfriend”; 3] began his mornings at Skyline High School by praying with his Godmother and Supervisor; 4] passed out candy at hisgrandmother’s every Halloween; and 5] was well known by his family and friends as a respectful young man. But even more important is the fact that when the police officers decided not to respond to the call, but rather to bother Alan and his friends, all they knew is that they were 3 African-American young men. That’s why Alan was murdered.
Alan’s family is seeking justice for his death. We are determined to have this “incident” thoroughly investigated and all wrongful parties prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We ask that all of you support us by calling the City Councilman for District 7, Larry Reid, at 510-238-7007.

Here are some pictures of the “Angola Prison rodeo”, where prisoners compete to win packs of smokes and a few bucks. By sitting in a poker table while a bull charges them. The goal? To get the poker chip hanging off its horns.

These people aren’t cowboys, or glorified participants in a well respected tournament. These prisoners are shuffled over to this thing to be trampled by raging bulls for SMOKES, and maybe a hundred bucks. This is not something that would happen to anyone other than prisoners, and is part of an institution that systematically devalues their worth as people.

The rodeo rakes in millions of dollars a year, and that’s just the beginning of how shady the place is:

That year, the rodeo produced $2,463,822 in revenue.
But for all the hair-raising moments, the most unsettling part may be the strange symbolism of the opening pageantry. Putting a Confederate flag in a black man’s hands on a former slave plantation seems a little too deliberate for an institution that claims to have shed its darker past.

“I have always said, and I continue to say, that if slavery had persisted up until 2010, into the modern day, that would probably have been a well-run slave plantation,” Wilbert Rideau says. “I think it would have evolved into what exists right now at Angola.” We’re in his living room in Baton Rouge, with his wife, Linda.

Angola was a plantation first, housing slaves who cut sugar cane for the master. At the end of the 19th century it evolved into a prisoner lease system, with sentenced prisoners being rented to area companies. In 1901, Angola officially became a state-operated penitentiary, but in name only. It remained a plantation, with prisoners crowded into large wooden buildings and working from sunup to sundown in sugar cane and cotton fields—rain or shine, 12-14 hours a day, seven days a week.

http://colorlines.com/archives/2011…ana_prison.html

“Angola is disturbing every time I go there,” Tory Pegram, who coordinates the International Coalition to Free the Angola 3, told Truthout. “It’s not even really a metaphor for slavery. Slavery is what’s going on.

Angola is not alone. Sixteen percent of Louisiana prisoners are compelled to perform farm labor, as are 17 percent of Texas prisoners and a full 40 percent of Arkansas prisoners, according to the 2002 Corrections Yearbook, compiled by the Criminal Justice Institute. They are paid little to nothing for planting and picking the same crops harvested by slaves 150 years ago.

ETA: the colorlines link above doesn’t work, but here is another article they wrote about it.

ETA2: the redphoenix link doesn’t either. here’s the actual article.

Oklahoma has a prison rodeo. They have the prisoners try to snatch a bandanna off the bull’s horn for $100.
